Magic Breakfast: SLT Team Day

Magic Breakfast is a charity which supports schools and local authorities in the UK to feed children and to end child morning hunger for good.

The organisation has grown significantly over recent years but remains people-centred, as it strives to achieve a vision that no child or young person in the UK is too hungry to learn.

The Brief

Facilitate a team day with a highly talented, and recently formed SLT. Helping them to reflect on what has already been achieved, and to refocus on a busy and eventful year ahead, which would require a greater level of engagement, collaboration and debate among the peers.

The considerations

  • A recently formed SLT bringing a range of skills and qualities to the charity.
  • A general election on a date unknown in the next 12 months, which would require the CEO to spend more time in public and political activities.
  • An ambitious plan and changing priorities which requires the SLT members to take a greater interest in all aspects of the charity, to make decisions.

The solution:

A Collaborative design approach

We spent time with Lindsey, CEO of Magic Breakfast, to ensure that the session complimented what was already in place within the charity and the team. The session required elements when Lindsey should be involved as a member of the team, and when to step out and support the facilitator.

“It is so refreshing to work with a business who invests the time to get to know us, and understand what we are looking to achieve, and some of the challenges we face.”

A day together

Focused on moving from good to great with the introduction of some practical tools which support collaboration and positive conflict.

The team celebrated achievements and recognised the contributions of each member, as well as acknowledging the challenges and opportunities ahead.

The tools were used to discuss the impact of current projects on time, resource and strategic priorities, and the team identified improvement areas by reviewing and learning lessons from the previous year.

“Everyone reflected how much they enjoyed the session and we saw immediate results as we began to focus on building our plans for future years with more engagement and accountability and a greater sense of the impact of the decisions the team make together.”
